John 14 Devotional: Discover the comfort of Christ’s promise to prepare a place for us and the revelation of the Holy Spirit. Explore the profound truth that Jesus is the only Way, Truth, and Life.
Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to John 14. We are standing in the Upper Room during the final hours before the Cross. The disciples’ hearts are troubled, and perhaps yours is too. Today, Jesus speaks words of eternal comfort, pulling back the curtain on our heavenly home and promising that we will never be left as orphans. Let us lean into the peace that only He can provide.
The Way to the Father and the Gift of the Spirit
John 14 contains some of the most exclusive and comforting claims in all of Scripture. Jesus begins by comforting His disciples with the promise of "many mansions" in His Father’s house, leading to the landmark declaration: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." As your Statement of Faith affirms, salvation is a gift received through faith in Jesus Christ alone. In this chapter, Jesus also introduces the Holy Spirit, the "Spirit of Truth," who will dwell within believers to guide, teach, and empower them.
What can we learn from this today? In this chapter, we see the Unity of the Trinity. Jesus explains that to see Him is to see the Father, and that the Spirit will come to continue His work. As your Statement of Faith emphasizes, the Holy Spirit is of one essence with the Father and the Son, working in us for sanctification. This means that as a believer, you are never alone. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you through the Spirit. When Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you," He isn't offering the temporary peace of a world without trouble, but the internal peace of a soul reconciled to its Creator. We are called to live in obedience, not out of fear, but as an expression of our love for the One who has already prepared our eternal home.
14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
“Come now; let us leave.
Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." With these words of assurance, let us bring our requests and our worship to our Heavenly Father.
Dear Heavenly Father, We praise You for the clarity of Your Word and the certainty of our salvation through Jesus Christ. We believe that He is the only Way to You, the absolute Truth, and the source of eternal Life. Thank You for the promise of an eternal home in Your presence and for the gift of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
Lord, I ask that You would quiet my troubled heart today. When the world feels chaotic, remind me of the peace that Jesus left with us—a peace that surpasses all understanding. Holy Spirit, I ask that You would be my Teacher and my Guide. Convict me of sin, lead me into all truth, and empower me to live a life of obedience that reflects my love for Christ. Help me to trust in the "greater works" You wish to do through Your Church by the power of Your indwelling presence.
We pray for those who are searching for "the way" but are lost in the confusion of various philosophies; may they encounter the exclusive and inclusive love of Jesus. We lift up the universal Church, that we would be a people marked by the peace of Christ and the fruit of the Spirit. We pray for a world filled with anxiety and fear; use us as instruments of Your peace to show others that there is a Father who loves them and a Savior who has made a way for them to come home. Amen.
Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commands." Is there a specific area of your life where your obedience—or lack thereof—is currently reflecting the depth of your love for the Lord?
What does "many rooms" or "many mansions" mean? This is a metaphor for the abundance of space and the permanent nature of our dwelling with God. It signifies that there is a place specifically prepared for every true believer in the presence of the Father.
Why is Jesus the "only" way to God? Because Jesus is fully God and fully man, He is the only one who could bridge the gap caused by human sin. As the sinless sacrifice, only His death and resurrection provide the justification required for us to be reconciled to a holy God.
Who is the "Advocate" or "Counselor"? This refers to the Holy Spirit. The Greek word Parakletos means "one called alongside to help." He is the third person of the Trinity who stays with the believer forever to provide comfort, strength, and wisdom.
Thank you for joining us for this beautiful study of John 14. May the peace of Christ guard your heart and mind as you go through your day. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow for the teaching on the True Vine in John 15.
