Matthew 17 Devotional: Experience the Transfiguration of Jesus on the high mountain. Discover the glory of the Son of God, the healing of the boy with a demon, and the lesson of faith that moves mountains.Â
Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to Matthew Chapter 17. Today, we climb a high mountain with Peter, James, and John to witness a moment where the veil between heaven and earth is pulled back. We are about to see Jesus not just as a teacher, but in His full, radiant glory. Let us prepare our hearts to behold the King in His beauty.
The Radiant King and the Valley of Faith
Matthew 17 begins with the Transfiguration, where Jesusâ face shines like the sun and His clothes become white as light. Flanked by Moses and Elijah, Jesus is confirmed as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. However, the mountain-top experience is immediately followed by the reality of a broken world in the valley below, where the disciples struggle to heal a demon-possessed boy. Jesus uses this moment to teach a profound lesson on the power of even the smallest "mustard seed" of faith.
What can we learn from this today? In this chapter, we see the Preeminence of Jesus Christ. As your Statement of Faith affirms, Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. The Fatherâs voice from the cloud commands us: "Listen to him!" This reinforces that the Bible is our final authority because it is the testimony of the One who is God Himself. We also learn that while we may cherish "mountain-top" spiritual experiences, our mission is often in the "valleys" of human suffering. We are called to live by a faith that depends entirely on Godâs power, not our own. Whether we are marveling at His glory or facing a "mountain" of difficulty, we rest in the authority of the One who can move every obstacle by His Word.
17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, âLord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three sheltersâone for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.â
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, âThis is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!â
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. âGet up,â he said. âDonât be afraid.â 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, âDonât tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.â
10 The disciples asked him, âWhy then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?â
11 Jesus replied, âTo be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.â 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 âLord, have mercy on my son,â he said. âHe has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.â
17 âYou unbelieving and perverse generation,â Jesus replied, âhow long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.â 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, âWhy couldnât we drive it out?â
20 He replied, âBecause you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, âMove from here to there,â and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.â [21]Â
22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, âThe Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.â And the disciples were filled with grief.
24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, âDoesnât your teacher pay the temple tax?â
25 âYes, he does,â he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. âWhat do you think, Simon?â he asked. âFrom whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxesâfrom their own children or from others?â
26 âFrom others,â Peter answered.
âThen the children are exempt,â Jesus said to him. 27 âBut so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.â
The disciples fell facedown in terror, but Jesus touched them and said, "Get up. Donât be afraid." As we come before our Glorious King in prayer, let us feel His strengthening touch today.Â
Dear Heavenly Father, We praise You for the revelation of Your Sonâs glory on the mountain. We believe that Jesus Christ is the radiance of Your glory and the exact representation of Your being. Thank You for the testimony of the cloud and the Spirit, confirming that Jesus is Your beloved Son in whom You are well pleased.
Lord, help me to have ears that truly listen to Him. In a world full of competing voices and distractions, may the words of Christ be my final authority and my greatest delight. When I descend from the "mountains" of worship into the "valleys" of daily stress and spiritual battle, give me a faith that does not waver. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength instead of Your limitless power. Increase my faith, even if it is currently as small as a mustard seed, and use it to move the mountains of fear, doubt, and pride in my life.
We pray for our church community, that we would be a people who are transformed by beholding Your glory. We lift up those who are currently facing "mountains" that seem impossible to moveâthose dealing with chronic illness, broken families, or spiritual oppression. Grant them the faith to trust in Your sovereign hand. We pray for a world that is blinded to the glory of Christ; may the light of the Transfigured King break through the darkness and bring many to the salvation that is found in Him alone. Amen.
The disciples wanted to stay on the mountain in booths, but Jesus led them back down to serve. Is there a "mountain-top" moment in your life that God is asking you to carry into a "valley" of service for someone else today?Â
Why did Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus? Moses represented the Law and Elijah represented the Prophets. Their presence shows that Jesus is the fulfillment of all Old Testament Scripture and the one to whom they both pointed.
What does "Transfiguration" mean? The Greek word is metamorphoĆ, where we get "metamorphosis." It means a change in form. It wasn't a change in who Jesus was, but a revealing of His true divine nature that is usually veiled by His humanity.
Why couldn't the disciples heal the boy? Jesus pointed to their "little faith." It wasn't that they lacked a "formula," but that they had stopped depending fully on God's power. Jesus emphasizes that prayer and dependence are the keys to spiritual authority.
Thank you for joining us for Matthew 17. May the vision of the Glorious Christ stay with you throughout your day, giving you strength for every valley. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow for Jesusâ teachings on humility and forgiveness in Matthew Chapter 18.Â
