Matthew 2 Devotional: Follow the journey of the Magi and the escape to Egypt. Discover how God’s sovereign hand protected the young Messiah from King Herod, fulfilling ancient scriptures and revealing Jesus as the King for all nations.
Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to Matthew Chapter 2. Today, we move from the quiet stable in Bethlehem to a story of global recognition and intense opposition. We see the heavens declaring the glory of God through a star and earthly powers trembling at the news of a new King. Let us sit with the Magi in worship and marvel at the God who directs the stars to lead us to His Son.
The Seeking Sages and the Jealous King
Matthew 2 presents a dramatic contrast between those who seek Jesus to worship Him and those who seek Him to destroy Him. The Magi, likely Gentiles from the East, travel a great distance following a star to find the "King of the Jews." In contrast, King Herod, fueled by pride and fear of losing his earthly power, plots to kill the child. Through dreams and divine warnings, God directs Joseph to flee to Egypt, ensuring the safety of the Savior.
What can we learn from this today? This chapter is a masterclass in the Sovereignty of God. As your Statement of Faith affirms, God is the Creator and sovereign Lord of all things. We see Him orchestrating history, nature, and even the movements of pagan travelers to fulfill His Word. Whether it was the flight to Egypt or the return to Nazareth, every step was a fulfillment of "what was spoken by the prophets." It reminds us that no plan of man can thwart the perfect will of God for our salvation. Like the Magi, we are called to offer our most precious "gifts"—our lives, our hearts, and our worship—to the One who truly reigns.
2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
The Magi fell down and worshiped the young child. As we enter into prayer, let us likewise bow our hearts before the King of Kings, trusting in His protective hand over our lives.
Dear Heavenly Father, We worship You today as the sovereign Lord who holds the stars in place and the hearts of kings in Your hand. We believe that the Scriptures are Your inspired and errorless Word, and we see Your hand at work in every prophecy fulfilled in Matthew 2. Thank You for being a God who guides those who seek You and protects those who belong to You.
Lord, help me to be like the Magi—willing to go the distance to find You and ready to worship You with everything I have. When the "Herods" of this world—fear, anxiety, or opposition—threaten my peace, remind me that Your plan for my life cannot be defeated. I trust in Your divine guidance; lead me by Your Spirit away from temptation and toward the path of Your perfect will.
We pray for those who are currently "in Egypt"—those who feel like exiles, far from home or living in places of danger. Protect them and provide for them as You did for the young Jesus and His family. We lift up those who are searching for truth but are looking in the wrong places; may the light of Your Gospel shine like the star of Bethlehem, leading them to the feet of the Savior. We pray for our world leaders, that they would recognize Your supreme authority and rule with justice and mercy. Amen.
The Magi followed the light they were given until it led them to Jesus. What is a "light" or a prompt from the Holy Spirit that God is giving you today, and how can you take a step of obedience toward Him?
Who were the Magi? They were likely scholars and astronomers from Persia or Babylon. Their presence shows that Jesus came not only for the people of Israel but as a Savior for all nations and peoples.
Why did the family flee to Egypt? This was a direct act of obedience to God's warning to protect Jesus from Herod's massacre. It also fulfilled the prophecy in Hosea 11:1, "Out of Egypt I called my son," identifying Jesus with the history of Israel.
What is the significance of the gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh)? These were gifts fit for a King. Gold represented His royalty; Frankincense represented His deity and role as High Priest; and Myrrh (an embalming spice) foreshadowed His future sacrifice and death for our sins.
Thank you for joining us for Matthew 2. May you walk today with the joy of the Magi and the peace of God’s protection. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow as we head to the Jordan River for Matthew Chapter 3.
