John 17 Devotional: Step into the holy of holies as Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and all future believers. Discover the heart of our High Priest for the unity, sanctification, and eternal life of His Church.Â
Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to John 17. We are standing on holy ground today. This entire chapter is a single, profound prayer offered by Jesus just moments before He entered the Garden of Gethsemane. It is the longest recorded prayer of our Savior, revealing His deepest desires for you and for the global Church. Let us listen with hushed hearts to the conversation between the Son and the Father.Â
The High Priestâs Intercession and the Glory of the Son
John 17 is divided into three movements: Jesus prays for His own glorification, for the protection of His immediate disciples, and finally, for all who would believe in Him through their messageâwhich includes us today. Jesus speaks of a glory He shared with the Father "before the world began," asserting His deity and His mission to reveal the Father to humankind. He defines eternal life not just as a duration of time, but as a relationship: "that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
What can we learn from this today? In this chapter, we see the eternal essence of the Trinity. As your Statement of Faith affirms, we believe in one true God who eternally exists in three personsâcoequal in power and glory. Jesus prays for the Unity of the Church (Article 8), asking that we would be "one" just as He and the Father are one. He also prays for our Sanctification, asking the Father to "sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." This reminds us that we are called to be in the world but not of it, set apart by the authority of the Scriptures to demonstrate Godâs love to a world that desperately needs to know the Savior.
17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
Jesus looked toward heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come." As we enter into prayer, let us join our voices with the intercession of our Great High Priest who even now stands before the Father on our behalf.Â
Dear Heavenly Father, We praise You for the profound mystery of the Trinity and for the love that exists between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, fully God and fully man, and we thank You that He is our High Priest who never stops interceding for us. Thank You for the gift of eternal lifeâthe privilege of knowing You intimately through faith.
Lord, I ask that You would sanctify me today by Your truth. Let Your Word be the final authority that shapes my thoughts, my words, and my reactions. Help me to live "in the world" without being "of the world," reflecting Your glory in every dark place I encounter. I pray for the unity of Your Church; break down the walls of pride and division that hinder our witness. May we be so united in our love for You and for one another that the world will know that You sent the Son.
We pray for the universal Church, the body of Christ across every nation. Protect Your people from the "evil one" as Jesus requested. We lift up those who are hearing the Gospel for the first time today; may they come to know the only true God and find salvation in Jesus Christ alone. We ask that our lives would be a living answer to Jesusâ prayer, demonstrating Your love so clearly that others are drawn into Your eternal Kingdom. Amen.
Jesus prayed that His followers would be "sanctified by the truth." Is there a specific truth from Scripture that you need to apply to a situation in your life today to help set you apart for Godâs purposes?Â
What does "Glorify your Son" mean in this context? Jesus was asking the Father to reveal His divine nature through the upcoming events of the Cross and Resurrection. The Cross was the ultimate display of Godâs glory, love, and justice working together.
Why does Jesus pray for "Unity"? Unity is the primary way the world recognizes that Jesus was sent by God. When the Church is divided, our witness is weakened; when we are one in spirit and truth, we reflect the nature of the Trinity.
What does it mean to be "not of the world"? It means that while believers live physically on earth, our values, our identity, and our ultimate allegiance belong to the Kingdom of Heaven. We are citizens of a different country living as ambassadors here.
Thank you for joining us for the "Holy of Holies" in John 17. May you walk today with the confidence that Jesus has prayed for you personally. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow as we witness the arrest and trial of our Lord in John Chapter 18.Â
