Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord!
Welcome to our 2027 "One Year Whole Bible" series. Today, we will read 1 Chronicles chapters 3 through 5, and Psalm 108.
In these three chapters of 1 Chronicles, we continue to observe God's sovereign rule and faithful grace through detailed genealogies: Chapter 3 traces the lineage of David and his descendants, highlighting God's unshakeable covenant; Chapter 4 highlights Jabez among the descendants of Judah, who prayed to God in the midst of pain and was granted his petition to enlarge his border; Chapter 5 records the genealogies of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, reminding us that victory belongs to those who trust in God, while unfaithfulness leads to exile. Turning to Psalm 108, David, when facing battles and challenges, praises God with a steadfast heart, exalting His steadfast love that is great above the heavens and His faithfulness that reaches to the clouds.
Before starting today's reading, take a moment to reflect on these questions:
When experiencing distress or limitations in life, do I dare to cry out to God like Jabez, believing He will show me favor?
Facing unknown challenges, is my heart steadfast like David's, willing to praise God among the nations and lift up His glory above the earth?
With eager and reverent hearts, let us enter into His Word today.

5 Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.
2 For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's:)
3 The sons, I say, of Reuben the firstborn of Israel were, Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
4 The sons of Joel; Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,

15 Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, chief of the house of their fathers.
16 And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan, and in her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, upon their borders.
17 All these were reckoned by genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
18 The sons of Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went out to the war.
19 And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur, and Nephish, and Nodab.
20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.
21 And they took away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men an hundred thousand.
22 For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.
23 And the children of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land: they increased from Bashan unto Baalhermon and Senir, and unto mount Hermon.
24 And these were the heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valour, famous men, and heads of the house of their fathers.
25 And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.
26 And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
108 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
2 Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
3 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.
4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.
5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;
6 That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.
7 God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;
9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.
10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?
11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?
12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.
Thank you for completing today's reading from 1 Chronicles and Psalms with us.
No matter how generations pass or history unfolds, God's steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness never changes.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
Psalm 108:3–5 (KJV)
"I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth."
Psalm 108 is a psalm of praise written by David when facing warfare and national crisis. David begins by declaring, "My heart is steadfast," setting the tone of his praise on God's infinite mercy (lovingkindness) and truth (faithfulness).
In these verses, David elevates God's steadfast love and truth to the cosmic height—great above the heavens and reaching to the clouds. Facing earthly troubles, David did not fixate on the immediate enemies, but lifted his eyes upward to behold God's immense majesty. Praising God among the nations is an open declaration of faith: no matter the circumstances, God reigns, and His glory transcends the whole earth. For us today, knowing God's heavenly love frees our hearts from temporal anxieties and fills us with divine strength and joyful worship.
Today's scripture shows us God's faithfulness in human generations, His gracious answer to Jabez's cry, and David's resolve to praise God above all else. Let us bow our hearts in prayer:
Heavenly Father, whose steadfast love is great above the heavens and whose faithfulness reaches to the clouds, we give You praise and thanksgiving!
In 1 Chronicles chapters 3 through 5, we see Your wonderful care and divine design woven through long genealogies. Chapter 3 records the lineage of David, reminding us that through the rise and fall of kingdoms and the return of the remnant, Your promise to David’s throne never failed. Lord, Your historical faithfulness is the ultimate anchor for our lives.
In chapter 4, we are deeply moved by the prayer of Jabez. Though Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, his birth brought pain. Yet he refused to yield to despair and cried out to the God of Israel: "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my border, that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" Lord, You granted his request. Grant us faith like Jabez’s—to seek You courageously amidst life's bottlenecks and pain, experiencing Your extraordinary favor and protection.
In chapter 5, we see how the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh prevailed in battle because they cried out to You and trusted in You; yet when they later turned to false gods and abandoned You, they were carried away into exile. Lord, this soberly reminds us that victory depends not on worldly strength, but solely on wholehearted trust in You. Keep our hearts faithful to Your truth all our days.
Psalm 108 stirs our hearts through David's prayer. David declared his heart was steadfast, resolved to praise You among the nations and extol Your mercy above the heavens. Lord, be exalted above the heavens, and let Your glory cover all the earth!
Lord, today we commit our dear family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. As they face personal limitations, inner anxieties, or physical weakness, grant them the courage and faith of Jabez to call upon You and experience Your enlarging grace. When any of our friends or colleagues face intense spiritual battles or heavy workplace burdens, open their eyes to realize that trusting in You brings true victory. Preserve their hearts from worldly compromises, and help them walk steadfastly, giving thanks to Your name in their homes and workplaces.
We also lift up this turbulent world to You. Nations continue in conflict, and countless people suffer displacement, poverty, and disaster, leaving hearts filled with fear and hostility. Lord, have mercy on this earth. Still the injustice and violence, and comfort the grief of those who suffer. Bring leaders of nations to recognize human limitations and learn to govern in humble fear of You. Raise up Your church in this crooked generation to sing songs of praise, serving as a beacon of Your love and faithfulness among all peoples, bringing peace and salvation to every searching soul.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow to praise You with joyful hearts.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today in reading God’s Word. May His truth be the strength of your heart each and every day.
