Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to Revelation 10. As we pause between the sixth and seventh trumpets, God gives John—and us—a vivid reminder of His supreme authority over all creation. Let us open our hearts to the message of the little scroll and prepare to stand firm in the mission He has given to His Church.

Introduction: The Mighty Angel and the Sweet and Sour Scroll

In Revelation 10, the action halts briefly as John beholds a magnificent, mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud with a rainbow over his head. Standing with one foot on the sea and one on the land, the angel demonstrates God’s absolute sovereignty over the entire earth. He holds a small scroll open in his hand. When the seven thunders utter their voices, John is commanded to seal up what they said and not write it down. The angel then swears by the eternal God that there will be no more delay—the mystery of God is about to be fulfilled. John is instructed to take the scroll and eat it; it tastes as sweet as honey in his mouth, but turns bitter in his stomach. Finally, John is given a renewed commission: he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.

What can we learn from this today? This chapter teaches us two profound truths about God's Word and His plans. First, God remains in complete control even when judgment and chaos surround us. The rainbow around the angel's head reminds us of God's mercy and covenant faithfulness. Second, the "sweet and sour" scroll reflects our experience with divine truth. The Gospel and God's promises are extraordinarily sweet to our souls, bringing life, hope, and salvation. Yet, the message of truth can also feel "bitter" because it exposes sin, warns of divine judgment, and calls believers to endure hardship and persecution. As witnesses of Christ, we are called to digest the whole counsel of God—taking it deep into our lives—and faithfully share His truth with a world in need.

10 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.

9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Prayer

John was commanded to take the scroll and feed on God's truth before speaking it to others. As we go to prayer, let us ask the Lord to help us digest His Word fully so that our lives reflect His message clearly.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise You as the Creator of heaven, earth, the sea, and everything in them. You are the eternal God who holds all of history in Your hands, and we rest in the knowledge that Your sovereign purpose will never fail.

Lord, thank You for the precious gift of Your Word. It is sweeter than honey to our lips. We ask that You give us a deep hunger to read, study, and cherish Your truth every day. Teach us not only to hear Your Word, but to digest it fully so that it shapes our minds, our desires, and our actions. Give us the courage to embrace the whole truth—even when it challenges our comfort, calls us to repentance, or requires us to stand against the culture.

We pray for Your universal Church, that we would be faithful messengers of the Gospel to every tribe, tongue, and nation. Grant us holy bold perseverance as we share the hope of Christ in difficult times. Protect our hearts from fear, and help us remember that Your promises are sure and that Your final victory is near. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray,
