Dear brothers and sisters, welcome to Revelation 20. We have arrived at one of the most solemn, mysterious, and ultimately victorious chapters in all of Scripture. Here, the long conflict between God and Satan reaches its decisive conclusion. As we study these powerful verses together, let us take heart knowing that Jesus Christ holds final authority over history, death, and evil.

Introduction: The Reign of Christ and the Final Victory

In Revelation 20, the Apostle John is shown the climax of God's redemptive timeline. The chapter opens with an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key to the bottomless pit, who binds Satan for a thousand years. During this period, the faithful who have stood firm in Christ reign with Him. When the thousand years are completed, Satan is released for a brief moment to deceive the nations once more, only to be completely and permanently defeated and thrown into the lake of fire.

The chapter concludes with the Great White Throne Judgment. All the dead, great and small, stand before God as the books are opened. Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, and anyone whose name is not found written in the Book of Life is cast into the lake of fire.

What can we learn from this today? This chapter offers both profound comfort and a sobering reminder of eternity:

Evil Has a Limit: Satan operates on a short leash. God sets the boundaries of evil, and his ultimate destruction is guaranteed.
Justice Is Real: God does not overlook sin. The Great White Throne Judgment assures us that every wrong will be addressed and that God's righteousness will prevail.
Our Ultimate Security Is in Christ: The most vital detail in this chapter is whether a person's name is in the Book of Life. Salvation is not earned by our own works, but by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, who bore our judgment on the cross.

20 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise You as the Almighty Sovereign of the universe, the Alpha and the Omega, the God who holds all of human history in Your hands. We thank You for the truth of Your Holy Word, which gives us absolute confidence that evil will not have the last word.

Lord, we thank You that Jesus Christ has already triumphed over sin, death, and the power of the enemy through His death and resurrection. As we read about the final judgment, we acknowledge that You alone are holy, just, and righteous. We pray that You would fill our hearts with a holy reverence for Your name.

We thank You with deep gratitude that through faith in Jesus, our names are recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life. Help us to live lives that reflect Your grace—walking in righteousness, purity, and steadfast hope. Give us a passionate heart to share the Gospel with those who do not yet know You, so that they too may find life in Your Son. When we face trials or spiritual hostility today, remind us that the victory is already won. Keep us faithful until the end. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray,
