Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to Ephesians 2. Today, we explore one of the most stunning chapters in all of Scripture regarding our salvation. Paul takes us on a journey from spiritual death to eternal life, showing us how the grace of God transforms our past, present, and future. Let us open our hearts to hear how Christ has reconciled us to God and to one another.

Introduction: Made Alive by Grace, United in Christ

In Ephesians 2, Paul lays out the stark contrast between our spiritual condition without God and our new life in Christ. He begins by reminding us that before coming to faith, we were spiritually dead in our sins, driven by worldly desires. But because of God's immense love and rich mercy, He "made us alive together with Christ." Paul makes it clear that salvation is completely a gift of grace through faith—not something earned by good works, so that no one can boast. However, being saved by grace leads directly into God's purpose: we are His craftsmanship, created for good works that He prepared beforehand.

In the second half of the chapter, Paul explains how Christ's death broke down the dividing wall of hostility between Jews and Gentiles. Through the cross, Jesus abolished the ceremonial law's separation and created "one new man," uniting all believers into a single body. We are no longer strangers or aliens, but fellow citizens and members of God's household, built together on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.

What can we learn from this today? This chapter gives us a foundational understanding of the Gospel and the nature of the Church. Salvation is entirely an act of God's sovereign grace; our human efforts can never earn it. Yet, once we are saved, our faith must express itself in a life of godliness and active service. Furthermore, Ephesians 2 reveals the profound unity of the Church. Regardless of background, ethnicity, or past status, every believer is part of the same spiritual temple where God dwells by His Spirit. In a world full of division, the Church is called to demonstrate true unity grounded in the peace of the cross.

2 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Prayer

Paul reminds us that we who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. As we turn to prayer, let us approach the throne of grace with deep gratitude for the free gift of salvation and the peace He has secured for us.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise You for Your rich mercy and the great love with which You have loved us. We acknowledge that on our own, we were spiritually dead and powerless to save ourselves. Thank You for the gift of salvation—that by grace we have been saved through faith, not of our own doing, but as a gift from Your hand. We stand amazed that You have raised us up and seated us in heavenly places with Christ Jesus.

Lord, remind us daily that we are Your workmanship, handcrafted for a purpose. Help us to walk faithfully in the good works You have prepared for us. Guard our hearts against self-righteousness and boasting, keeping us anchored in the truth of Your Word. Where division exists, let the peace of Christ rule. Help us to love our brothers and sisters in the faith, recognizing that we are all built together into a holy sanctuary for Your Spirit.

We pray for the universal Church, that we would shine as a bright witness of reconciliation in a divided world. We pray for those who are still "far off"—trapped in spiritual darkness and living without hope. Open their eyes to behold the richness of Your grace and draw them near through the Gospel. Strengthen our local assembly to stand firm on the true foundation, Jesus Christ our Chief Cornerstone
