Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to 1 John 1. Today we begin a warm, deeply personal letter written by the Apostle John. He opens with an eyewitness testimony of Jesus Christ—the Word of Life—and invites us into an intimate, joyful walk in God’s light. Let us open our hearts to the freedom and fellowship that come through Him.

Introduction: Walking in the Light and the Promise of Forgiveness

John begins his letter by grounding our faith in history. He testifies that he and the other apostles personally saw, heard, and touched Jesus—the eternal life that was with the Father and was made manifest to humanity. John shares this message so that believers may have genuine fellowship with God and with one another, filling their joy to overflowing. He then declares a foundational truth about God's character: "God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all."

What can we learn from this today? This chapter offers a clear call to honest living before God. Walking in the light does not mean pretending we are sinless; rather, it means living transparently in the truth of God’s Word. John warns that if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves. 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Prayer

John reminds us that God is faithful and just to forgive us when we bring our lives into His light. As we turn to prayer, let us come with open hearts, confessing our need for Him and receiving His restoring grace.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise You as the God who is light, in whom there is no darkness at all. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ—the Word of Life—who was seen, heard, and touched so that we might know the truth. We thank You for the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth and convicts us of our need for You.

Lord, I want to walk in Your light today. I ask You to shine Your truth into every corner of my heart. Forgive me for the times I have tried to hide my faults or pretend to be without sin. I confess my shortcomings to You now, trusting in Your promise that You are faithful and just to forgive my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Thank You for the precious blood of Jesus that purifies us completely.

We pray for the Church, that we would be a community defined by honesty, grace, and genuine fellowship. Help us to put away hypocritical living and walk together in unity. We lift up those who are living in the darkness of guilt or shame; let the comforting light of the Gospel reach their hearts today. We pray for a world searching for truth, that they may see the light of Christ in us and be drawn into real, eternal fellowship with You.
