Dear brothers and sisters, peace in Christ. Welcome to Revelation 4. Today, our journey through Scripture takes a breathtaking turn. As the scenes of earthly churches give way, an open door in heaven appears. We are invited to lift our eyes above the trials and noise of this world to behold the eternal reality: God is seated on His throne, surrounding Himself with unceasing praise. Let us step into the throne room with reverence and joy.

Introduction: Wake Up, Stand Firm, and Open the Door

In Revelation 4, John is caught up in the Spirit to see what must take place. The central focus of the entire chapter—and indeed the entire cosmos—is a single subject: the throne of God. John uses vivid imagery of jasper, carnelian, and an emerald rainbow to capture the brilliant glory of the One who sits upon it. Surrounding the throne are twenty-four elders and four living creatures, representing all of creation and the redeemed people of God. Day and night, without stopping, they fall down in worship, casting their crowns before Him and declaring His holiness, power, and glory as Creator.

What can we learn from this today? This chapter gives us an unshakable foundation for our daily lives: God is sovereign and completely in control. In times of uncertainty, earthly turmoil, or personal trial, Revelation 4 reminds us that the center of the universe is not chaotic—it is occupied by the holy and almighty God. Our highest calling as believers is to join in this heavenly rhythm of worship. When we recognize that God created all things for His pleasure, our perspective shifts. We learn to lay down our own "crowns"—our achievements, plans, and pride—at the feet of the One who alone is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power.

4 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.

8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Prayer

John saw a throne set in heaven, reminding us that God reigns supreme over every detail of our lives. As we turn to prayer, let us fix our eyes on His majesty and offer Him the worship He deserves.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We praise You as the Almighty Lord, the One who was, and is, and is to come. You are the sovereign Creator of the heavens and the earth, and by Your will all things exist and were created. We stand in awe of Your holy presence, Your majesty, and Your perfect justice and mercy.

Lord, forgive us for the times we focus so much on our earthly circumstances that we forget Who is on the throne. Lift our eyes today above our worries, fears, and struggles. Fill our hearts with the awe and reverence that John experienced in the heavenly throne room. Help us to willingly cast down our own crowns—our pride, self-reliance, and personal ambitions—and surrender everything to You. Teach us to worship You not just with our lips on Sunday, but with our obedience, choices, and trust every single day.

We pray for Your Church throughout the world, that our worship would be marked by true holiness and passion for Your glory. We lift up those who are facing immense hardship, persecution, or grief; grant them a vision of Your eternal throne and the peace of knowing that You hold the future. May Your light shine brightly in a dark world, drawing people from every tribe, language, and nation to bow before You.
