Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord! Welcome to our "One Year Whole Bible" series.
Today, we will read Isaiah chapters 38 through 41, and Psalm 1.
Perhaps you have had moments like this: after running non-stop for a long time, your physical energy is completely drained, anxiety feels like a mountain on your chest, and you feel so utterly depleted that even bringing yourself to pray feels exhausting. We try so hard to grit our teeth and push through, but the harder we force it, the heavier every single step becomes.
Isaiah chapters 38 through 41 guide us through a breathtaking transition from desperation to hope, and from weariness to divine strength. In these chapters, King Hezekiah faces terminal illness and weeps bitterly before God, and the Lord graciously heals him and adds fifteen years to his life. By chapter 40, the prophet speaks God’s deepest comfort to His people—reminding us that human power is like grass that withers, and even youth will faint and fall, but the everlasting God never grows tired. He promises to pour extraordinary strength into those who wait quietly on Him. In chapter 41, He reassures us: "Fear not, for I am with you!" Meanwhile, Psalm 1 sets the stage for the entire Psalter, reminding us that a truly blessed life is like a tree planted firmly by streams of water, yielding fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
As we read today, let us reflect: When I feel utterly depleted and unable to keep going, do I keep forcing my way through self-effort, or am I willing to pause and take a deep spiritual breath before God? Is my life like chaff blown away by the wind, or a flourishing tree rooted by the streams of His Word?
Let us enter into His Word today with honest and expectant hearts.
38 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.
2 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord,
3 And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
4 Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying,
5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
6 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.
7 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken;
8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.
9 The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:
10 I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
11 I said, I shall not see the Lord, even the Lord, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.
12 Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.
13 I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.
14 Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.
15 What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
16 O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live.
17 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.
19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.
20 The Lord was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the Lord.
21 For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaister upon the boil, and he shall recover.
22 Hezekiah also had said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the Lord?
39 At that time Merodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.
2 And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.
3 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.
4 Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
5 Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts:
6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.
7 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
8 Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace and truth in my days.
40 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
10 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
17 All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
19 The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.
20 He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.
21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
23 That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.
24 Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.
25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
41 Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.
2 Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.
3 He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet.
4 Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.
5 The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.
6 They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.
7 So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, It is ready for the sodering: and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.
8 But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend.
9 Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.
10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.
12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.
13 For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
15 Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.
16 Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.
17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together:
20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.
21 Produce your cause, saith the Lord; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.
22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.
23 Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.
24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you.
25 I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay.
26 Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.
27 The first shall say to Zion, Behold, behold them: and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings.
28 For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
29 Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Thank you for completing today's reading from Isaiah and Psalms with us.
Human energy and willpower are strictly limited, but when we connect to the endless supply of the Creator of heaven and earth, we find the strength to soar again.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
An eagle soars high and far not by frantically flapping its wings, but by learning to catch the rising thermal currents, spreading its wings to glide effortlessly.
In the original language, "waiting" implies fixing one's gaze with expectant hope and total trust. God knows our human limits—even the strongest young men, relying on human strength, will eventually burn out and stumble. Waiting on the Lord is not passive resignation; it means stopping our anxious human striving and resting our hearts on God's sovereign power and faithfulness. When we open the wings of faith toward Him and yield to the wind of the Holy Spirit, God infuses His inexhaustible strength into our souls, enabling us to run without growing weary and walk without fainting.
Today's scripture shows us the healing and restoration born from pouring our hearts out to God, extends a precious promise of renewed strength to every weary soul, and opens the Psalms by showing us the foundation of a blessed life. Let us draw near and pray together:
Everlasting Lord, who never faint nor grow weary, and who give power to the faint, we praise You today!
Father, thank You for giving us Your word today through Isaiah chapters 38 to 41 and Psalm 1. Today's passage comes like a cool spring in a dry land, refreshing our weary hearts and giving us the secret to renewing our strength under life's heavy burdens.
Lord, in Isaiah chapters 38 and 39, we see King Hezekiah sick unto death. In his despair, he turned his face to the wall and wept bitterly before You, and You heard his prayer, saw his tears, healed his body, and granted him fifteen more years of life. This touches us deeply: whenever You see us trapped in sickness, trials, or weakness, You never look away with indifference. Yet we also notice how Hezekiah, after his healing and victory, let pride creep in by showing off his treasures to the Babylonian envoys, planting seeds of future trouble. Forgive our subtle pride. Teach us to remain deeply humble after experiencing Your grace and deliverance, giving You all the glory and guarding our hearts against self-satisfaction.
In Isaiah chapters 40 and 41, You speak words of profound comfort through the prophet: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God." You remind us that all human flesh is like grass, and its beauty like the flower of the field, but Your word stands forever. Lord, we confess that when facing steep mountains or dark valleys, we often try to push through using our own willpower, only to end up exhausted, anxious, and dry. Yet You whisper tenderly to us: "They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles!" Teach us to lay down our frantic striving. Instead of flapping our wings in self-effort, show us how to wait quietly before You, spreading our wings of faith so the wind of Your Holy Spirit can carry us above the storms of life.
Psalm 1 reminds us that the truly blessed person does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful, but delights in Your law and meditates on it day and night. Father, ignite this deep hunger for Your Word within us. Keep us from planting our lives in the dry deserts of worldly noise; plant us firmly by the streams of Your truth, so that no matter how hot the drought gets, our leaves remain green and we bear rich spiritual fruit in every season.
Today, we also bring our dear family members, friends, and co-workers before You. Many are carrying long-term fatigue and heavy pressure—workplace setbacks, family burdens, or chronic physical exhaustion—feeling completely drained and lost. Lord, touch their weary souls today and breathe the life of Your Holy Spirit into them. Grant them the faith to wait upon You, cast their heavy loads at Your feet, and taste the sweet reality of renewed strength, soaring above their valleys like eagles.
We also bring this restless, highly anxious world into Your hands. In a fast-paced society driven by ruthless competition, countless people run endlessly only to feel burnt out and empty, chasing worldly riches that wither like grass. Lord, have mercy on this world. Through Your church, hold high the light of truth and share the gospel of heavenly rest and salvation with this weary generation. May those struggling in darkness and burnout find You, the living stream, and anchor their lives upon You, the unshakable Rock.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow with strength to soar on eagles' wings through You.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today in reading God’s Word. May His truth be the strength of your heart each and every day.
We invite you to share this daily reading with your family and friends, so that we may grow together in God’s Word and walk united in prayer.
We will see you tomorrow as we continue our spiritual journey together!
