Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord! Welcome to our "One Year Whole Bible" series.
Today, we will read Mark chapters 3 through 4, and Psalm 80.
In life, the moments that make us feel most isolated often aren't just the size of our external challenges, but when those closest to us misunderstand our convictions or when sudden storms rise up in our lives, making us wonder if God even cares.
Mark chapters 3 through 4 take us right into these intense moments. Jesus faced pressure from both sides: hostile opposition from religious leaders on the outside, and confusion from His own family on the inside, who thought He was out of His mind. Yet Jesus redefined true spiritual family—declaring that whoever does God’s will is His mother and brother. He then taught His disciples how to cultivate receptive hearts through parables, and concluded by calming a fierce storm on the Sea of Galilee with a single word, showing He is not only a teacher but the Sovereign Lord over all creation. Alongside this, Psalm 80 lifts up a heartfelt prayer to Israel's Shepherd, crying out: "Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved."
As we read today, let us reflect: When those around me misunderstand my faith, do I still choose to prioritize doing God's will above human approval? When life's unexpected storms threaten to swamp my boat, do I give in to panic, or do I turn to the Master who stills the wind and waves?
Let us enter into His Word today with honest and expectant hearts.
3 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.
9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.
10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.
11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.
13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;
17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.
20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
4 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
14 The sower soweth the word.
15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
3 Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
4 O Lord God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
5 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure.
6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
9 Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.
10 The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
11 She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
12 Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
13 The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
14 Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;
15 And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
17 Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
18 So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
19 Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
Thank you for completing today's reading from Mark and Psalms with us.
Human misunderstandings and worldly storms will pass, but those who do the will of God find eternal belonging and unshakable peace in the Lord.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
Mark 3:35 (KJV)
"For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother."
Jesus is not dismantling the value of the earthly family here; rather, He is unveiling a far deeper, eternal spiritual family. When His relatives tried to hold Him back due to misunderstanding, Jesus declared that true intimacy with Him isn't defined by physical bloodlines or outward religion, but by a heart eager to hear and obey the Father’s will.
This brings immense comfort to anyone feeling lonely on their faith journey. Whenever we face isolation or misunderstanding for standing up for truth, Jesus personally calls us His "brother, sister, and mother." In His love and the Father's will, we are never solitary travelers; we belong to an enduring heavenly family.
Today's scripture reveals the warmth of belonging to God's family, demonstrates Jesus' authority over life's storms, and leads us in Psalm 80 to pray for His face to shine upon us. Let us draw near and pray together:
Sovereign Lord over every storm, who adopts us as Your very own family, we praise You today!
Father, thank You for giving us Your Word today through Mark chapters 3 and 4, and Psalm 80. Today's passage anchors our anxious thoughts and fills our hearts with fresh confidence in Your faithful care.
Lord, in Mark chapter 3, we see Jesus facing cold hostility from His enemies and deep misunderstanding from His own family, who thought He had lost His mind. Yet amidst these pressures, He pointed us to the heart of spiritual life, declaring: "Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother." Father, how deeply this speaks to us. In our daily lives, when our faith choices are misunderstood by loved ones or sidelined in our workplaces, we often feel hurt and isolated. Forgive us for seeking human approval over Yours. Grant us courage to stay faithful to Your will, knowing that as we follow You, we are held in the closest fellowship with Christ and are never truly alone.
Lord, in Mark chapter 4, You teach us through the parable of the sower to guard the soil of our hearts, and then You demonstrate Your sovereign power over the raging sea with a command: "Peace, be still!" When the disciples panicked in the storm, asking, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" it mirrored our own hearts during sudden life crises. When health, finances, or relationships fracture, we too are tempted to ask if You have forgotten us. Forgive our weak faith. Open our eyes to see that the Lord of wind and waves is in our boat! Teach us not to panic by what we see, but to rest in Your presence and trust You to bring peace to our storms.
Psalm 80 leads us to cry out from the depths of our hearts: "Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved." Lord, we acknowledge that our spiritual lives sometimes grow weary and dry like a neglected vine. Let Your face shine upon us today. Revive our tired spirits with Your lovingkindness, helping us sink our roots deep into Your grace once again.
Today, we also place our dear family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. Many are currently caught in overwhelming storms—struggling with family tensions, painful misunderstandings, or sudden crises that leave them exhausted and afraid. Lord, step into the boat of their lives today. Speak "Peace, be still" to the fierce waves in their circumstances and the panic in their minds. Soften the hearts of our unbelieving loved ones, drawing them into Your family through the truth of Your Word.
We bring this turbulent world before You as well. Many nations are suffering through social division, the shadow of war, and natural disasters, leaving people searching desperately for peace. Lord, have mercy on this earth and still the raging storms among nations. Grant wisdom to leaders and comfort to those who suffer. Raise up Your church in this anxious age to stand as a beacon of hope, leading lost and frightened souls into the safe harbor of Jesus Christ.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow to walk in victory as we do Your will.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today in reading God’s Word. May His truth be the strength of your heart each and every day.
We invite you to share this daily reading with your family and friends, so that we may grow together in God’s Word and walk united in prayer.
We will see you tomorrow as we continue our spiritual journey together!
