Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord! Welcome to our "One Year Whole Bible" series.
Today, we will read Romans chapters 11 through 13, and Psalm 119, verses 46 through 90.
When facing the onslaught of worldly values and various sinful temptations, we often find our thoughts easily conformed to the world, leaving our lives lacking heavenly strength and direction.
Romans chapters 11 through 13 unveil God's magnificent plan of salvation and practical principles for Christian living. After marveling at the deep wisdom and knowledge of God in chapter 11, Paul transitions in chapter 12 to practical life application, urging us to respond to God's mercies by presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, not conforming to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of our minds to serve one another and overcome evil with good. Chapter 13 further instructs us to be subject to governing authorities, love one another, and put on the armour of light. Psalm 119 (verses 46–90) expresses the psalmist's deep love for God's word, holding fast to His statutes even when facing affliction or proud mockers, finding comfort and light in God's law.
As we read today, let us reflect: Am I daily surrendering my life as a living sacrifice to God? Are my thoughts following the trends of this world, or are they constantly renewed by the light of God's Word?
Let us enter into His Word today with honest and expectant hearts.
11 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.
11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?
13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.
20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.
24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father's sakes.
29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.
47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.
48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.
49 Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.
51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.
52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O Lord; and have comforted myself.
53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
55 I have remembered thy name, O Lord, in the night, and have kept thy law.
56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
57 Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.
58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.
59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.
61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.
64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.
65 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according unto thy word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.
68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.
69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.
75 I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.
76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.
77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.
78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.
79 Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies.
80 Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.
81 My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.
82 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?
83 For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.
84 How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?
85 The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law.
86 All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.
87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.
88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.
89 For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.
90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.
Thank you for completing today's reading from Romans and Psalms with us.
Paul's solemn call to full surrender and the psalmist's passionate love for God's statutes continue to inspire and encourage every child of God today.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
Romans 12:1–2 (KJV)
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
These two verses stand as the supreme summary of Christian consecration and spiritual transformation in the New Testament. Rooted in "the mercies of God," Paul urges every redeemed believer to make a total life response to the Lord.
To "present your bodies a living sacrifice" means that true surrender is not a fleeting emotional moment, but daily dedicating our physical lives, time, energy, and talents to God as a holy sacrifice ready for His use. To "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" reveals the key to life transformation—refusing to be molded by worldly values of fame and wealth, and allowing the Holy Ghost and Scripture to continuously cleanse our thoughts. Only with a renewed mind can we discern God's good, acceptable, and perfect will, living out a genuine life of sacrifice that pleases Him.
Today's scripture teaches us the vital truth of full surrender and mind renewal, while guiding us to find strength in God's Word to overcome affliction and worldly trends. Let us draw near and pray together:
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! Heavenly Father, who rules all things and shows us boundless mercy and compassion, we praise You!
Thank You for Your Word today, guiding us through Romans chapters 11 to 13 and Psalm 119, verses 46 to 90. Your word shines like a brilliant, warm beacon, illuminating our inner weaknesses while revealing the vast wisdom of Your salvation and the grace to live a holy life.
Lord, in Romans chapter 12, Paul urges us by Your mercies: "that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Lord, the call to total surrender in this key verse deeply moves us! Forgive us for so often wanting to enjoy Your salvation and blessings without truly giving You our time, energy, affections, and bodies; forgive us for keeping control of our own lives instead of surrendering fully. Grant us a heart that truly understands Your mercy, so that we may joyfully offer our daily lives on Your altar as living sacrifices, living for You in every mundane duty and offering up a holy, acceptable life to You.
Lord, in Romans chapters 12 and 13, Paul further counsels us: "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God," instructing us to overcome evil with good and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, this command to renew our minds and overcome the world touches our hearts deeply! Forgive us for subtly conforming to worldly vanity, success, and values, and for compromising in our thoughts. Cleanse our minds daily by Your Holy Ghost and Word, granting us spiritual discernment so that we do not drift with the world, but cast off the works of darkness, put on the armour of light, and reflect the sweet aroma of Christ through love and goodness.
In Psalm 119 (verses 46–90), You show us the psalmist speaking of Your testimonies before kings and clinging to Your statutes even when afflicted or slandered by the proud, finding song and comfort in Your word while trusting that "Thy hands have made me and fashioned me." Lord, when we face life's distress or human misunderstanding, we too are prone to lose focus on Your Word. Soften our hearts and ignite a deep love for Your truth, so that in affliction we may see Your faithfulness, store Your word in our hearts, and stand firmly on Your statutes with heavenly strength and hope.
Today, we also commit our dear family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. In an age filled with worldly temptations and confusing philosophies, many are pulled by worldly values, struggling in mental confusion and inner emptiness. Lord, let Your Holy Ghost enlighten their hearts and make Your Word a turning point in their lives. Guide them out of worldly confusion to surrender their lives to You, experiencing the true freedom and joy of a renewed mind in Jesus Christ.
We bring this restless, morally decaying world before You as well. Worldly cultures remain filled with self-centeredness, hedonism, and hostility to Your will. Lord, have mercy on this earth and restrain the spread of worldly sin. Raise up Your church so that Your people will not compromise, but stand as living sacrifices, boldly lifting high the name of Jesus Christ with holy lives, pure love, and renewed minds, serving as salt and light to draw lost souls unto You.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow to walk triumphantly with renewed minds and Holy Ghost strength.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
