New 2027 Edition
Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord! Welcome to our "One Year Whole Bible" series.
Today, we will read Ephesians chapters 1 through 3, and Psalm 129.
In daily life, we often fall into the exhausting cycle of striving in self-effort to earn validation. Even in our faith, we can mistakenly believe that our own works and performance are required to earn God's favor and salvation.
Ephesians chapters 1 through 3 display God's grand plan of redemption prepared for us in Christ before the foundation of the world. In chapter 1, Paul praises God for blessing us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, predestining us unto the adoption of children. Chapter 2 reveals our past reality of being dead in trespasses and sins, declaring that "by grace are ye saved through faith"—salvation is entirely the unearned gift of God, breaking down the middle wall of partition to make us one in Christ. Chapter 3 shares the mystery of Christ hidden from ages past, with Paul praying that we might be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man to comprehend Christ's love which passeth knowledge. Psalm 129 is the testimony of God's people under oppression, praising the righteous Lord who cuts asunder the cords of the wicked and preserves His own.
As we read today, let us reflect: Am I truly resting in the free grace of Jesus Christ, boasting not in my own works? When facing trials and oppression, do I firmly trust that God's love and righteousness will preserve me to the end?
Let us enter into His Word today with honest and expectant hearts.
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:
2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
2 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
3 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
129 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.
4 The Lord is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.
6 Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
7 Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.
8 Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord.
Thank you for completing today's reading from Ephesians and Psalms with us.
Paul's doxology of God's boundless grace and the Psalms' assurance of the righteous Lord continue to inspire and comfort every child of God today.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
In these pivotal verses, Paul articulates the foundational truth of the Christian faith in the clearest, most compelling way—justification by grace through faith.
To be "saved" originates entirely in God's unmerited favor ("by grace") and is received into our lives through trust ("through faith"). This means salvation is never a wage earned through human moral effort, good deeds, or religious rituals; rather, it is an unconditional, free gift from a holy God to sinners who deserved judgment. Being entirely "the gift of God," it completely silences all human boasting. When we truly grasp that our salvation is "not of works," we are set free from self-righteous pride, as well as freed from the tormenting anxiety of performance-driven fear, enabling us to attribute all glory, honor, and thanks to our gracious God alone.
Today's scripture unveils the boundless riches of grace and mysteries in Christ, while teaching us the spiritual secret of relying on our righteous Lord amidst trials. Let us draw near and pray together:
O Heavenly Father, Creator who predestined us to all spiritual blessings before the foundation of the world and who abounds in boundless mercy and grace, we praise You!
Thank You for Your Word today, guiding us through Ephesians chapters 1 to 3 and Psalm 129. Your word shines like a brilliant, warm beacon, illuminating our inner self-reliance and spiritual fatigue, while revealing the eternal blessings and vast salvation prepared for us in Jesus Christ.
Lord, in Ephesians chapter 1, we see how You chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, predestining us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ, and granting us redemption and forgiveness of sins through His blood. Paul prayed for us to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, that we may know the hope of Your calling and the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints. Lord, these heavenly spiritual blessings bestowed upon us in Christ deeply move us! Forgive us for so often focusing narrowly on earthly material gains, and forgive our spiritual blindness in neglecting the riches of Your inheritance. Open the eyes of our understanding, that we may know our exalted identity in Christ and live courageously with heavenly hope and dignity.
Lord, in Ephesians chapters 2 and 3, we see how You delivered us when we were dead in trespasses and sins. Paul solemnly declared: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." You abolished the enmity through the cross, reconciling us to God as one body, and granting us strength in the inner man to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge. Lord, this free gift of salvation and the unmeasurable love of Christ touch our hearts deeply! Forgive us for the hidden pride and self-boasting in our hearts, and forgive us for trying to earn Your love through our own performance or falling into despair over our weaknesses. Root this pure grace deeply within us, that we may no longer boast in self, but rest humbly in Your grace, constrained and filled with Christ's love.
In Psalm 129, You show us the cry and testimony of Your people: "Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say: Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me." David described the plowers plowing upon his back, yet affirmed that the righteous Lord hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked. Lord, we too encounter unprovoked hostility, oppression, and enemy attacks in life, feeling the deep pain of being plowed over. Soften our hearts and strip away our fear and anxiety. Teach us like the psalmist to trust firmly that You are a righteous Lord who will plead the cause of Your people, cutting asunder the cords of the enemy and preserving us from being overcome by the world.
Today, we also commit our dear family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. In an age driven by performance, competition, and heavy burdens, many are dead in trespasses and anxiety, bound by work-righteousness and living in deep fatigue and vanity. Lord, let Your Holy Ghost enlighten their hearts through the book of Ephesians to see the precious free gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Guide them to surrender self-striving and pride, coming before Your throne of grace to receive the peace of forgiveness and eternal spiritual blessings.
We bring this restless and broken world before You as well. Worldly cultures remain filled with boastfulness, human pride, and cold indifference toward Your grace. Lord, have mercy on this generation and stretch forth Your saving hand to restrain human arrogance. Raise up Your church to stand united in the Spirit as Paul prayed, holding high the unearned grace of the cross of Jesus Christ, proclaiming the mystery hidden from ages past, and drawing countlessly lost souls to share in the unsearchable riches of Christ.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow to walk triumphantly filled with Christ's grace and love.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
