Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord! Welcome to our "One Year Whole Bible" series.
Today, we will read 2 Thessalonians chapters 1 through 3, and Psalm 134.
When facing tribulations, confusing false teachings, or weariness in daily labor, we often feel our faith wavering and struggle to remain worthy of our calling.
2 Thessalonians chapters 1 through 3 is Paul's encouraging epistle to the church in Thessalonica, which was standing firm amidst severe persecution. Paul commends their growing faith and mutual love, comforting them with the promise of the Lord Jesus' glorious return and righteous judgment. He warns them not to be shaken by false rumors claiming the day of Christ had already come, urging them to stand fast in the truth. Furthermore, Paul exhorts them to walk orderly, work with quietness, eat their own bread, and never grow weary in doing good. Psalm 134, the final Song of Degrees, calls upon the servants of the Lord who stand by night in the house of the Lord to lift up their hands and bless Him, receiving a blessing from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
As we read today, let us reflect: Am I holding fast to faith during trials? Am I trusting God to fulfill with His power all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith? In dark and weary seasons, am I willing to lift up my hands and bless the Creator of heaven and earth?
Let us enter into His Word today with honest and expectant hearts.
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
3 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.
5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.
6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
134 Behold, bless ye the Lord, all ye servants of the Lord, which by night stand in the house of the Lord.
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.
3 The Lord that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.
Thank you for completing today's reading from 2 Thessalonians and Psalms with us.
Paul's powerful prayer for the church to stand firm and the psalm of nocturnal praise continue to inspire and encourage every child of God today.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today's daily key verse:
2 Thessalonians 1:11 (KJV)
"Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:"
Written amidst the intense persecutions faced by the Thessalonians, Paul's prayer reveals the ultimate pursuit and divine power source for the Christian life.
To be counted "worthy of this calling" does not mean earning salvation through human merit, but rather having our lives transformed so that our walk aligns with our high, heavenly calling. Living out such a calling amidst suffering and worldly pressure is impossible through mere human willpower; therefore, Paul specifically prays that God would fulfill it "with power." Our desire for goodness and the work produced by our faith will wither without the sustaining strength of God's Holy Spirit. Only through God's sovereign power can our inner desires for good and our labors of faith bear abundant fruit, so that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in us.
Today's scripture reveals the necessity of relying on God's power to live worthy of His calling, while teaching us the secret of night-season worship. Let us draw near and pray together:
O Sovereign, Righteous, and Almighty LORD, Maker of heaven and earth, who preserves Your saints in power, we praise You!
Thank You for Your Word today, guiding us through 2 Thessalonians chapters 1 to 3 and Psalm 134. Your word shines like a brilliant, warm beacon, illuminating our inner weaknesses while showing us Your divine power that preserves the church in trial and the sweet communion of praising You by night.
Lord, in 2 Thessalonians chapter 1, we see the apostle Paul giving thanks for the Thessalonians' growing faith and charity in tribulations, praying for them: "Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power." Lord, the divine power and holy calling revealed in this key verse deeply move us! Forgive us for so often attempting to do good in our natural flesh, only to grow weary and discouraged when obstacles arise; forgive us for the times our daily walk has failed to reflect the dignity of Your calling. Manifest Your heavenly power within us, grant us steadfast faith, fulfill all the good pleasure of Your goodness in us, and sustain every work of faith by Your great strength, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified through our lives.
Lord, in 2 Thessalonians chapters 2 and 3, we see Paul urging the believers not to be easily shaken in mind or troubled by false doctrines regarding the Lord's coming, but to stand fast in the truth. Paul also commands them not to walk disorderly or in idleness, but to work with quietness and never grow weary in well doing. Lord, Paul's commitment to truth and practical order touches our hearts deeply! Forgive us for wavering or growing anxious when worldly philosophies surround us, and forgive our moments of spiritual laziness or discouragement in daily labor. Grant us spiritual discernment and steadfast resolve so that, kept by Your grace, we may work quietly, hold fast to truth, and never tire of doing good.
In Psalm 134, You show us Your servants who stand by night in the house of the LORD, lifting up their hands in the sanctuary to bless You, while the LORD who made heaven and earth blesses them out of Zion. Lord, we often pass through night-seasons of suffering or obscurity where it is difficult to find a song of praise. Soften our hearts and open our eyes so that like those night watchmen, we learn to lift up holy hands and offer pure praise even in the dark. We firmly believe that the Maker of heaven and earth will pour out His blessing from His sanctuary upon us.
Today, we also commit our dear family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. In an age filled with doubt, vanity, and heavy burdens, many are shaken by life's storms or feel isolated in dark seasons. Lord, let Your Holy Ghost rest upon them, fulfill every desire for goodness by Your divine power, and strengthen their fragile faith. May they encounter the Maker of heaven and earth in their night seasons and receive peace and blessing out of Zion.
We bring this restless and broken world before You as well. Worldly cultures continue in confusion, distorting truth and promoting spiritual apathy. Lord, have mercy on this generation and stretch forth Your saving hand to restrain deceit and wickedness. Raise up Your church to be like the Thessalonians—steadfast in faith and love amidst trial, anchored in truth, shining as lights in a dark world, and demonstrating a holy life empowered by faith.
Hear our prayer, guide our steps today, grant us peaceful rest tonight, and empower us tomorrow to walk triumphantly in the power of the Holy Ghost.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
