Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord!
Welcome to our 2027 "One Year Whole Bible" series. Today, we will read Numbers chapters 25 through 27, as well as Psalm 47.
Today’s scriptures mark a crucial turning point near the end of Israel’s wilderness journey. At Shittim, the people fell into immorality and idolatry, provoking the Lord's anger; yet Phinehas stood in the gap with holy zeal, putting a stop to the plague. Following this, God commanded a census of the new generation to prepare them for inheriting the Promised Land, while also demonstrating His precise care for personal inheritance and women's rights through the petition of Zelophehad’s daughters. Finally, Moses passed his leadership to Joshua, showing the faithful continuity of God’s redemptive plan across generations. Meanwhile, Psalm 47 lifts our eyes to the heights of glory, calling all nations to clap their hands and shout to God with triumph, for the Lord is the great King over all the earth.
Before beginning today’s reading, take a moment to reflect on these questions:
When surrounding culture and temptations try to lower my spiritual standards, do I have the courage, like Phinehas, to stand firm in the gap for God's holiness?
In times of life transitions, changing roles, or unknown futures, do I believe that God remains in sovereign control and faithfully provides for my inheritance?
Is my heart weighed down by immediate trials, or can I lift up praises because the Lord is the King ruling over all the earth?
With reverent hearts and triumphant praise, let us step into God's Word today.
25 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
16 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
26 And it came to pass after the plague, that the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,
2 Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers' house, all that are able to go to war in Israel.
3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
4 Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the Lord commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt.

55 Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.
56 According to the lot shall the possession thereof be divided between many and few.

61 And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the Lord.
62 And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
63 These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.
64 But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
65 For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
27 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
5 And Moses brought their cause before the Lord.
6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.
10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the Lord commanded Moses.
12 And the Lord said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13 And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.
14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
15 And Moses spake unto the Lord, saying,
16 Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
17 Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd.
18 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the Lord: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.
47 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
2 For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.
5 God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.
9 The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.
Thank you for completing today’s reading from Numbers and Psalms with us.
Whether through solemn divine discipline, the numbering of a new generation, or the passing of the torch between leaders, God's Word reminds us: though earthly circumstances and human generations change, God’s sovereign reign over the earth stands firm forever, and His faithfulness endures.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today’s daily key verse:
Psalm 47:1–2 (KJV)
"O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth."
The Psalmist issues a ringing call that transcends national and cultural boundaries—"O clap your hands, all ye people!" This is not merely an intellectual agreement, but a joyful, wholehearted celebration of worship.
A "voice of triumph" springs from an unwavering confidence in God's ultimate victory. Even when we face turmoil, opposition, or anxiety in daily life, the Psalmist reminds us that the Lord Most High is awesome; He reigns not only within the walls of a church, but as the great King over all the earth. When we lift our gaze from earthly struggles to His heavenly throne, joy and praise naturally flow from our hearts.
Today’s scriptures reveal God’s righteous judgment against sin, His compassionate attentiveness to His people's needs, and His supreme kingship over all creation. Whatever challenges or exhaustion you carry today, the Lord invites you to lift up your praise. Let us bow our hearts in prayer:
Most High, Sovereign, and Almighty Heavenly Father, we exalt Your holy name!
In Numbers chapter 25, we see the Israelites committing harlotry with the daughters of Moab and worshipping Baal-peor, provoking Your righteous anger and bringing a plague upon the camp. Yet Phinehas, son of Eleazar, stood up with divine zeal for Your holiness, turning away Your wrath so that You established with him a covenant of peace. Lord, in an age of moral confusion and pervasive temptation, grant us spiritual courage and holy fear like Phinehas, that we may not compromise with the world, but stand in the gap and live out a holy testimony.
In Numbers chapter 26, You commanded Moses and Eleazar to take a census of the men of Israel twenty years old and above. Though the murmuring first generation had perished in the wilderness, Your promise did not fail, for You raised up a new generation. Lord, this reassures us that while humans may fail, Your plan of redemption never fails, and Your faithfulness endures through every generation.
In Numbers chapter 27, the daughters of Zelophehad came forward with courage and faith to ask for their father's inheritance, and You declared that they spoke correctly, establishing a statute of justice. Lord, You care for the small details of every individual's life, showing no partiality and caring for our practical needs. We also see Moses laying hands upon Joshua, imparting his honor so that Joshua could lead the people into the Promised Land. Teach us to yield to Your divine appointments and honor the godly passing of leadership in Your house and in our work.
Psalm 47 lifts our hearts to heaven. All nations are called to clap their hands and shout unto You with the voice of triumph! For You, O Lord Most High, are awesome—a great King over all the earth. Lord, when earthly powers shake and human hearts are anxious, Your throne remains unshakable. You reign over the nations in power, and Your ultimate victory is assured.
Lord, today we commit our loved ones, family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands. If any among them are trapped in temptation, immorality, or worldly snares, let Your Holy Spirit convict their hearts and grant them grace to break free; if any feel overlooked, disadvantaged, or helpless, be their defender just as You heard the daughters of Zelophehad; if any are facing leadership transitions or major life changes, grant them Joshua's courage and faith.
We also pray for our world today. Our world is plagued by wars, political divisions, and moral decay, as nations forget that You alone are the true King over all the earth. O Lord, let Your righteousness and peace reign among the nations. Soften the hearts of world leaders, relieve the suffering of those in distress, and let the Gospel spread to the ends of the earth, so that people from every nation may bow before You and praise Your name with the voice of triumph.
Hear our prayer today, and grant us victorious faith and joyful praise.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today in reading God’s Word. May His truth be the strength of your heart each and every day.
We invite you to share this daily reading with your family and friends, so that we may grow together in God’s Word and walk united in prayer.
We will see you tomorrow as we continue our spiritual journey together!
