Dear brothers and sisters, peace in the Lord!
Welcome to our 2027 "One Year Whole Bible" series. Today, we will read 1 Kings chapters 3 through 5, as well as Psalm 92.
When Solomon ascended the throne to succeed his father David, he was faced with overwhelming state affairs and a vast populace. When God appeared to him in a dream at Gibeon, Solomon did not ask for long life, riches, or the death of his enemies. Instead, he humbly asked for wisdom to discern between good and evil and to govern God’s people well. God was pleased with his request, granting him unprecedented wisdom alongside unasked wealth and honor. Solomon’s wisdom shone brightly through cases like the two mothers claiming the same child. Driven by this divine insight, Solomon began mobilizing massive resources in partnership with Hiram, King of Tyre, to prepare materials for building a temple for the name of the Lord. Meanwhile, Psalm 92 anchors our souls to a vital spiritual truth: those planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish like the palm tree and the cedar of Lebanon, bearing rich fruit even into old age.
Before beginning today’s reading, take a moment to reflect on these questions:
When facing major life decisions or heavy responsibilities, do I pursue worldly gain first, or do I seek heavenly wisdom from God to discern what is right?
Am I willing, like Solomon preparing for the temple, to offer my best time, energy, and talents as building materials for God's spiritual household?
Is my life rooted and "planted in the house of the LORD"? Amid changing circumstances and passing years, am I spiritual decaying, or am I flourishing through His living water?
With reverent and thirsty hearts, let us enter into His Word today.
3 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16 Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
17 And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18 And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
19 And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
22 And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
23 Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24 And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
26 Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
4 So king Solomon was king over all Israel.
2 And these were the princes which he had; Azariah the son of Zadok the priest,
3 Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder.
4 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:
5 And Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers: and Zabud the son of Nathan was principal officer, and the king's friend:
6 And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.
7 And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.
8 And these are their names: The son of Hur, in mount Ephraim:
9 The son of Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Bethshemesh, and Elonbethhanan:
10 The son of Hesed, in Aruboth; to him pertained Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher:
11 The son of Abinadab, in all the region of Dor; which had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife:
12 Baana the son of Ahilud; to him pertained Taanach and Megiddo, and all Bethshean, which is by Zartanah beneath Jezreel, from Bethshean to Abelmeholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam:
13 The son of Geber, in Ramothgilead; to him pertained the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him also pertained the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brasen bars:
14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo had Mahanaim:
15 Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he also took Basmath the daughter of Solomon to wife:
16 Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth:
17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar:
18 Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin:
19 Geber the son of Uri was in the country of Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer which was in the land.
20 Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry.
21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
22 And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,
23 Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl.
24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
27 And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.
28 Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
5 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.
2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,
3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.
4 But now the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.
5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.
6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the Lord this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.
8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.
9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.
10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire.
11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
12 And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.
13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.
14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.
15 And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;
16 Beside the chief of Solomon's officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
17 And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.
18 And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.
92 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:
2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,
3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.
4 For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.
5 O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.
6 A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.
7 When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:
8 But thou, Lord, art most high for evermore.
9 For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
11 Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.
12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
15 To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Thank you for completing today’s reading from 1 Kings and Psalms with us.
Human cleverness and earthly riches ultimately wither like grass if they lack the foundation of God's wisdom; only those who root their lives in the house of the Lord and fear the Most High will experience a vitality that time can never fade.
Now, let us quiet our hearts and meditate on today’s daily key verse:
Psalm 92:12–14 (KJV)
"The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing."
The palm tree grows upright and tall in scorching desert sands, while the cedar of Lebanon roots deeply into mountain rock, standing firm against freezing winds without decaying. The psalmist uses these vivid images to illustrate the resilience and abundance of a life connected to God.
This flourishing is not achieved through human willpower, but because they are "planted in the house of the LORD." When a person's life is anchored in God's presence and Word, an endless stream of grace nourishes their soul. The passing of time cannot diminish their spiritual vigor; even in old age, they bring forth rich spiritual fruit—love, peace, and joy—shading and blessing everyone around them.
Today’s scriptures reveal the divine wisdom God poured into Solomon and promise a fruitful life to those planted in His sanctuary. No matter what season of life you are in today, the Lord delights to grant you wisdom and keep your soul vibrant. Let us bow our hearts in prayer:
Most High, All-wise, and Ever-reigning Heavenly Father, we give You praise and thanksgiving!
In 1 Kings chapter 3, we see young Solomon standing before You in a dream at night, humbly acknowledging that he was but a little child who did not know how to go out or come in. He did not ask for long life, riches, or the life of his enemies, but prayed solely for an understanding heart to judge Your people and discern between good and bad. Lord, Your heart was pleased with his unselfish prayer, and You gave him a wise and understanding heart, along with unasked riches and honor. Father, cleanse our hearts from pride and short-sighted consumerism. In our daily choices, teach us to seek first Your kingdom and righteousness, pursuing the wisdom that comes from above.
In 1 Kings chapters 4 and 5, we witness Your faithfulness as You blessed Solomon with immense wisdom and understanding, largeness of heart as the sand on the seashore, and peace on all sides. To fulfill Your promise to his father David, Solomon set his heart to build a house unto the name of the LORD. He worked with Hiram, king of Tyre, mobilizing thousands of workers to quarry great stones and prepare cedar and fir timber. Lord, as we see the massive preparations for Your holy temple, our hearts are moved. Grant us a willing spirit to yield our finest time, talents, and resources toward building up Your church and kingdom work today.
Psalm 92 brings deep comfort to our spirits. You remind us that though the wicked spring as the grass, they shall be destroyed; but the righteous shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God, still bringing forth fruit in old age, remaining full of sap and green. Lord, what a glorious promise for our spiritual journey!
Lord, we commit our loved ones, family members, friends, and co-workers into Your hands today. Especially for those facing heavy workplace responsibilities or complex personal choices, grant them discerning wisdom and clarity as You did for Solomon. We also lift up the senior members among us; fill them with Your abundant grace, grant them physical and spiritual strength, and let their lives remain full of spiritual vitality, continually bearing fruit and testifying of Your goodness to the next generation.
We also pray for our world today. Modern society is flooded with human arrogance and worldly schemes, while many national leaders lack divine wisdom and righteousness, leading to ongoing conflicts and injustice. Lord, exalt Your sovereignty among the nations, and grant world leaders hearts that fear You and seek true peace. May the Gospel spread to the ends of the earth, so that lost souls will no longer wander in spiritual deserts, but be saved and planted in the house of the Lord, sharing in eternal, unwithering life.
Hear our prayer today, and order our steps so that our lives align with Your holy purpose.
In the name of Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today in reading God’s Word. May His truth be the strength of your heart each and every day.
